A 45-year-old man, identified as Sikiru Adebayo, was Thursday arraigned before a Magistrate Court, sitting in Osogbo for allegedly beating his son to death.
Adebayo, who was docked on a one-count charge of murder was said to have severely beaten his son to death after discovering that he stole a leather waist belt, belonging to his neighbour.
The police prosecutor, Sergeant Duro Adekunle, informed the court that accused committed the offence on theJuly 31, 2017 at Abidogun Zone 7 area of Osogbo, stating that the defendant flogged his son, Uthman Adebayo, to death for stealing a belt.
According to him, “the offence contravenes Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 34, Vol. 11, Law of Osun 2003.
Counsel to the defendant, Barrister Mudashiru Balogun, appealed to the court to grant his client bail on the most liberal terms, adding that the case file from the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) indicated that a case of manslaughter was preferred against the defendant.
Adebayo’s plea was not taken as the presiding Magistrate Fatimoh Sodamade ordered that the accused person be remanded in Police custody and the amendment of the charge from murder to manslaughter as indicated in the file from the DPP.
The case was adjourned to Friday, August 11, 2017 for mentioning.
