Experts train students on financial literacy, employability

Unilorin fresh students during an orientation programme

Experts in various careers on Thursday in Ilorin mentored students of the University of Ilorin on financial literacy, investment, entrepreneurship and career growth among others.

The programme tagged, NEXTU, is sponsored by the Pension Alliance Limited, a Pensions Fund Administrator (PFA).

Panellists, who came from various backgrounds at the programme tagged, NEXTU, and sponsored by the Pension Alliance Limited, a Pensions Fund Administrator (PFA), provided the students with knowledge and guidance for unleashing potentials in finances, entrepreneurship, technology, new media, entertainment and life choices.

Among the panellists were a financial expert and a housemate in the Big Brother Naija Reality Show, Mr Tobi Bakare, a young entrepreneur, Oluyomi Ojo, a young entrepreneur and the Special Assistant on Innovations and Partnership to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state, Joel Ogunshola.

Others are a financial analyst, Oluwatosin Olaseinde, and an award-winning musician, Abolore Akande popularly known as 9ice.

They all talked on tips to be successful in their careers and businesses, fund management and how to invest wisely with small funds.

Speaking on the rationale behind the project, Ms Sunmisola Mark-Okoma, the Head, Brand Management and Corporate Communications of PAL Pensions said that the initiative was a Corporate Social Responsibility of the PFA.

According to her, it is aimed to teach the youth in the country on financial literacy and employability having observed gap amongst the youth.

“We noticed that there is a gap amongst the youth because most people have the talent to make money and get rich.

“However, to become wealthy requires another set of skills to enable the money work for you and that is what we are trying to teach the students here”, he said.

Mark-Okoma, who asserted that they had been to 10 federal universities under the second edition of the programme, said that it was aimed at avoiding mistakes of the past amongst the generation.

She also explained another initiative called NEXTU Academy, which she said was in the pipeline and targeted at final year students of universities.

Under this initiative, she said that graduates in their national service year would have the opportunity to work and earn.
