The Presidency has dismissed the media report on the sack of Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Magu.
It said the report claiming the sack of EFCC boss is rather “speculative and pre-emptive.’’
Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mallam Garba Shehu, disclose this while reacting to the report via his Facebook page on Saturday.
Mallam Shehu said the presidency is still awaiting the outcome of an investigative panel instituted against Magu by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.
“We are reading reports that the EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu has been sacked.
“No report has been made available to the Presidency by the Attorney-General of the Federation over the matter.
“The report of his sack is therefore speculative and pre-emptive,” Mallam Shehu said.
Also, the EFCC, via its Twitter handle, on Saturday, debunked the report that Magu was removed from office, saying the news medium that reported it “lied, Magu not sacked.”
Earlier before the news of Magu’s sack went viral on the social media on Saturday morning, it would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari, had directed the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) to investigate various corruption allegations against some top Federal Government officials.
Most prominent among these top government officials are Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu.
Consequently, the AGF had since issued queries to the Acting Chairman of the EFCC and the SGF.
It would also be recalled Magu has been heading the EFCC in acting capacity since November, 2015, after he was nominated by the president, but his confirmation was recently turned down by the Senate, citing security report compiled by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The rumour of Magu’s removal went viral on the social media and some media websites on Saturday morning after The Guardian newspaper reported on its website that Magu had been redeployed to the Nigeria Police Force to pave way for a fresh nominee by Buhari.
The report said the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, had already notified the EFCC Acting Chairman on the development through a letter.
