Delta State police command has disclosed the arrest of 678 suspects and the recovery of 150 arms in the last eleven months.
The recovered arms include 32 AK-47/AK-49 rifles, 27 Beretta pistols,72 single barrel/cut-to-size, 19 pump action guns as well as 5042 ammunition and cartridges.
The state commissioner of police, Olufemi Abaniwonda disclosed this at a press briefing in Asaba on Tuesday.
According to him, the suspects including 131 for armed robbery, 88 kidnappers, 76 for murder, 329 cultists and 54 for rape/defilement were nabbed adding that the number of kidnapped victims rescued stood at 48 with
27 vehicles were recovered.
Abaniwonda said the command had its challenges adding “But with the cooperation of other security agencies, stakeholders, and the good people of Delta State, we surmounted them to a reasonable extent and restored peace to the state.”
Abaniwonda reiterated that 85% of the suspects arrested within the period under review were largely males and mostly youths.
This, he said, clearly showed that parenting the male child was in decline, advising that parents should therefore look out for their male children as much as they do to their female children.
“They should pay attention to their company, peer groups, and whereabouts. They are also advised to continue to talk to their children to shun all forms of cult-related activities, drug abuse, and other criminal vices,” he said.
He stated that the ban on tinted vehicles and the use of fireworks in Delta is still in force.
This, he elaborated, has become necessary to properly checkmate the activities of criminal elements who may want to take advantage of it.
He advised residents to abide by these directives as anyone found wanting will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
He assured members of the public of the command’s commitment to ensuring a crime-free yuletide while admonishing all residents to be law-abiding.
