In an effort to combat the illegal smuggling of petroleum products, the Nigerian Customs Service in Zone C, which oversees the South-South region, has successfully seized 4,250 liters of premium motor spirit (PMS) as part of its ‘Operation Whirlwind.’
Launched in May 2024 by Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adeniyi MFR, this initiative collaborates with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA) to tackle fuel smuggling across the country.
A statement from DC A.O Egunjobi, the Zone C commander, released to the media in Calabar on Tuesday, highlighted that “the leadership of Operation Whirlwind Zone C, under national coordinator Compt. HC Ejibunu, has made a significant seizure of 4,250 liters of PMS in the last two months within the designated operational area.”
It also noted that “early into this operation, notable outcomes have been achieved, particularly in addressing the illegal smuggling of PMS.”
To further its mandate against illicit PMS trade, the operation has made substantial progress, with the Cross River/Akwa Ibom Area Command playing a key role in supporting the mission.
The challenging landscape of creeks and waterways in the Zone poses difficulties for the operatives; however, they continue to fulfill their responsibilities effectively.
