The crisis rocking the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Monday, took another dimension, as a faction of the Party loyal to Professor Jerry Gana announced the suspension of its Acting National Chairman Professor Tunde Adeniran and Alhaji Shehu Gabam, the National Secretary and Vice Presidential Candidate respectively
It also approved the appointed Mr Supo Sonibare the former National Vice Chairman (South-west) as the Acting National chairman of the party.
The Party National Executive Committee, NEC at a stakeholders’ meeting on Monday organised by the faction also endorsed the Peoples Democratic Party , PDP, candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the forthcoming Presidential election as its adopted candidate at the poll as against the choice of the APC, Presidential Candidate in the election, President Muhammadu Buhari
According to a statement read by the newly appointed National Secretary of the faction, Adakole Ijogi, the party adopted Atiku based on his ideals of restructuring the country.
The communique reads in parts, “This directive is premised on the Alhaji Atiku Abubakar acceptance of the template for fiscal and political restructuring to devolve to the states all functions of government that are not the exclusive prerogative of obligations under international treaties or common services of states , and on assurance that Atiku will be able to effectively address the economic security and political challenges facing the polity.”
It directed all loyal members of the Party nationwide to cast their votes for Atiku at the Presidential poll on Saturday and vote for the Candidates of the Party in other elections based on the conviction that he was the only candidate capable of moving the nation forward.
The National Chairman of the party, Chief Olu Falae had last weekend tendered his resignation following the adoption of President Buhari, the APC candidate as its Presidential candidate for the Poll.
Consequently, Prof Tunde Adeniran, the Deputy National Chairman (South) was appointed the Acting National Chairman of Party before the new development.
The Stakeholders meeting was attended by the members of the National Working Committee of the Party, States Chairmen, Prof Jerry Gana and some prominent members of the Party.
Addressing the meeting earlier before going to its business session, Prof Gana advised members of the party to remain resolute and to continue with a vigorous campaign for the party and assured that victory was certain at the polls.
