The Oyo State government has acknowledged the closure of the Agbami Isolation Centre, Jericho, Ibadan.

Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Health, Dr Adebisi Ayoola, made this disclosure, on Friday when Tribune Online inquired about the closure of the Agbami centre for the past few days.

Speaking on the situation, Ayoola said the state closed down the Agbami centre because it was not overwhelmed with cases that are beyond the holding capacity of the Infectious Disease Centre, Olodo, Ibadan.

Ayoola said the 20 cases were presently being managed at the Olodo centre and were responding well to treatment.

Ayoola said, “On COVID-19, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), on Thursday, recognized what his excellency has been doing on health and all other health-related issues.

“When there are no more new cases and no need to admit them, the Agbami isolation centre was closed down. Some of these facilities had to be closed down, so, as at present only the Infectious Diseases Centre, Olodo is functioning.

“And currently we have 20 cases that are doing well and that means the state government is committed to curtailing the spread of COVID-19 and public health generally.”

Speaking on the cholera situation in the state, Ayoola said there presently were five cases on admission at General hospital, Kishi, Irepo local government area of the state.

In addressing the Kishi situation, Ayoola said the state ministry of health was ensuring the cases are efficiently treated.

He added that chlorine had been added to the concerned community while the people were also being sensitised on not drinking water from doubtful sources, avoiding dumping of faeces, refuse into streams and rivers, ensuring regular hand washing after visiting the toilet, bathroom and attending to anyone stooling, washing of fruits and vegetable well with clean water before eating and covering of all foods and drinks from house fly.

On the record of cholera in Akinyele local government, Ayoola said the ministry of health identified a case of cholera at a destitute centre there, but that it had been brought under control.

Ayoola said, “On the issue of Akinyele Local Government, at a destitute centre, there was a case of cholera.

“Immediately we were notified, staff of the ministry of health, as well as Akinyele Local Government, were there including the ministry of women affairs, as well as environment ministry.

“We joined hands and we realised that there is the need to add additional rings to the well. We also procured sachet water for them and we added another ring to that well that was mentioned.

“At the weekend, we contacted the General Manager of the Water Corporation and he gave us Alum, so alum and chlorine were given to the ministry of environment to treat the well.

“So as we speak now the well has been treated and they have started consuming portable water. Presently it is under control.

“Meanwhile, the case at Bakatari has been investigated and we observed that it was a rumour.

“If somebody is having diarrhoea and cholera, it has to be investigated to confirm that it’s actually cholera because there are some cases that mimic cholera.

“For instance, food poisoning can mimic cholera. So, we have to take the sample of the stool to confirm if it is truly Cholera.

“Concerning, Irepo Local Government, there actually was cholera in Kishi, and immediately we put our machinery in motion.

“We were on the ground, and the cases were attended to at the General Hospital Kishi. Presently, five cases are on admission at Kishi.

“Members of the state team went there to sensitise the people of the community and we have added chlorine to their well and there are all living well and okay.”
