Following the military coup in Niger Republic, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has ordered a no-flight zone as well as financial sanctions over the country
The ECOWAS under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu announced this disciplinary action following the special meeting held on today, in Abuja.
This decision is coming 21 hours after the European Union has said it is suspending financial support and cooperation on security with Niger following this week’s military coup.
The EU also said all cooperation actions in the domain of security are suspended indefinitely with immediate effect, EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell said in a statement on Saturday.
In separate telephone conversations, United States Vice President Kamala Harris and the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, have expressed strong support for Nigeria’s efforts toward the restoration of constitutional order in its northern neighbour.
