At least about 1,500 persons, on Tuesday, benefitted from the free medical outreach organized by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for the people of Gidan Kara, Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Speaking at the event the Director-General of NYSC Brig. Gen Ibrahim Shuaibu said National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) since its inception, recorded numerous landmark achievements in the area of national unity and integration as well as other spheres such as health care delivery, rural infrastructure, mass literacy, education, sport and other social services.
“Virtually all our contributions in these areas are made through the activities of successive batches of Corps Members, whose patriotic zeal, dedication and selflessness have been the source of pride to all Nigerians.”
Shuaibu said the program is under Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) with this year theme: “health is wealth for advancement.”
He further explained that it was a response to the rate of deaths among poor and rural people most of which could be avoidable.
Represented by The NYSC state coordinator Mr Philip Enatonme Enaberue, Shuaibu regretted that people in rural areas do not have access to health care service either because they do not exist or they are above their reach.
He added that in reaction to this the NYSC engage the services of Corps Doctors, and other medical-related graduates to attend to those in need.
The Director-General commended the Corps Members for their dedication to service while describing them as qualified to give the best medical services.
He promised the outreach would be a continuous exercise.
0n his part the state coordinator thanked the people for their impressive turnout and their cooperation towards the success of the outreach.
Also speaking the leader of the medical team, Dr Ishaya Lengdang said malaria has the highest number of cases with over 500 cases followed by childhood diarrhoea and hypertension.
Dr Ishaya further disclosed that some patients were referred to specialist hospitals for follow up due to the nature of their ailments stressing that most referral cases are surgical.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries the district head of Wamakko Alhaji Aliyu Barade thanked the NYSC for considering his community for the outreach.
On his part the chairman of Wamakko local government area Bello Haliru Gwiwa represented by his deputy Zubairu Muhammad thanked NYSC for the kind gesture and urged other agencies to emulate NYSC, pleading that the exercise should be a routine one.
