A non-governmental organisation (NGO) called “International Alert,” working to promote peace in Nigeria, has organised a training workshop for conflict prevention and management for dialogue facilitators in Zamfara State.
The two-day workshop was organized in collaboration with the UKaid Foundation for women social workers, traditional rulers, community leaders and security agents in two local government areas of Birnin Magaji and Tsafe in the state.
Speaking during the opening ceremony on Monday held at Command Guest House in Gusau, the state capital, Senior Project Officer International Alert, Mr Stephen John, disclosed that the aim of the workshop is to train facilitators on how to manage disputes at the community level without escalating.
He disclosed that dialogue is the best alternative to solving conflict and advised community leaders and policymakers to include dialogue in their policies.
“The objectives of the workshop are to promote stability and for facilitators to know how disputes can be solved within the community “.
The senior project officer explained that the international alert is working in two states in the country, Kaduna and Zamfara, with four local government areas.
“In Zamfara State, we are working in the communities of Birnin Magaji, Nasarawa Godel towns of Birnin Magaji local government area, and Tsafe, Bilbis community in Tsafe local government area “.
He maintained that the international alert is about peace-building: It’s largely working to straighten peace, building community resilience to ensure peaceful society, and we are largely working to build peace in the country”. He added.
During the workshop, Dr Hashim Ahmad, Dr Labbo Abdullahi, and Hajiya Rabi Ibrahim served as facilitators of the training in the state.
