China’s market regulator has accused United States chipmaker Nvidia of breaching its anti-monopoly laws, though details of the alleged violations were not disclosed. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
The announcement comes as United States and Chinese officials hold a second day of trade talks in Madrid, Spain, in a bid to ease tensions in their prolonged trade war. The discussions are being led by United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.
Talks are also taking place against the backdrop of uncertainty over TikTok’s future in the United States. Its Chinese owner, ByteDance, faces a looming deadline to divest the app or risk a nationwide ban. United States President Donald Trump, who initially pushed for the ban, has since softened his stance, recently suggesting the deadline could be extended once again.
China opened its investigation into Nvidia last December, a move widely seen as retaliation in the intensifying battle over semiconductor dominance. Washington has tightened restrictions on advanced chip exports to Chinese companies, with Nvidia at the center of the dispute.

Negotiators are expected to use the Madrid talks to discuss chip access and explore the possibility of a meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at a summit in South Korea this October.
The White House previously said the extension of the tariffs truce until November was intended to give both sides more time to address issues such as “unfair trade practices” and national security concerns.
Meanwhile, Trump has hinted TikTok’s fate remains uncertain, telling reporters: “We may let it die. Or we may… I don’t know. It depends. Up to China, it doesn’t matter too much.”
TikTok, one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, has an estimated 170 million users in the US.
