Professional bodies in the building industry have been urged to come together and form a development control body to ensure no building is built without following best practice and in line with the laws.
According to some experts, such collaboration has become necessary in order to promote safe, quality and standard building construction in the sector.
The advice is coming following the collapsed 21-storey building in Ikoyi, Lagos belonging to Fourscore Homes
Development control body by professional bodies in the industry, Group Chief Executive Officer, GPFI Group, Dr MKO Balogun, an engineer and real estate professional, said they should work with the relevant government’s agencies to enforce building development control laws in the sector.
Besides, he said that the government would need to be decisive on infringement of building development codes and laws, adding that such buildings should not only be stopped but demolished while all affected should be prosecuted and jailed.
He urged that relevant development control should start from registration of permits to development and not when the development has commenced and it’s almost completed, urging the government to ensure that only practitioners certified by relevant professional bodies are involved in building development.
Balogun raised two fundamental issues regarding the collapsed 21-storey building in Ikoyi, Lagos, saying the development did not follow best practice and that there was complete lack of regulatory control to checkmate the building development.
United States based housing and mortgage finance expert, Mr Kunle Faleti, said the time for professional associations in the building and real estate industry to come together and collaborate towards having a better, safer future for Nigeria and Nigerians is now.
According to him, they should come together and agree to develop an implementation plan for reforms aimed at ensuring the safety of the building and construction sector.
He suggested that the initial reforms should focus on improving the integrity of private building surveyors, including better registration and approval processes.
Faleti stated that an effective compliance and enforcement system in the building and construction industry remained critical for Nigerians to have confidence in the built environment.
