For the first time in over 24 years in Abia State, a reputable construction company, Julius Berger, is set to handle the full reconstruction of the resilient 6.8-kilometer Port Harcourt road in Aba.
The Governor, Alex Otti, is expected to kick off this project on Thursday.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, made this announcement on Wednesday while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by the governor.
He noted that the road has remained deplorable for many years, acknowledging that what previous administrations could not achieve in many years has been accomplished by Governor Alex Otti in just four months.
Prince Kanu disclosed that many roads in Aba, including Umuimo, Udeagbala, MCC, and Old Express, are ready for commissioning.
Furthermore, the operation to eliminate potholes in Umuahia is progressing steadily. Demolition work on the Ossah-Abia Tower expansion project has reached 80 per cent.
While acknowledging that Aba and Umuahia have been transformed into construction sites, the Information Commissioner stated that asphalt is to be laid along Uzuakoli Road.
Additionally, Alayi and Ozuitem roads have been earmarked for rehabilitation.
The Information Commissioner expressed concern about the level of street trading in major cities of the state, specifically referencing Aba, the commercial hub.
He stated that the government will not allow this trend to persist, and the committee in charge will henceforth ensure strict compliance.
Prince Kanu also revealed that the Aba International Trade Fair, which is scheduled to commence tomorrow, is intended to bring SMEs together to showcase the state’s potential to the world.
He added that ACCIMA is collaborating with the government to ensure the event’s success.
He further disclosed that following Abia’s participation in the Abuja trade fair, Abia has been commissioned to supply combat boots to the Nigerian Police.
Speaking on another front, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, informed us that his ministry is working with EDDC to restore electricity to all government establishments that were previously disconnected from the national grid due to non-payment of electricity bills.
He noted that this effort has led to the reconnection of some government establishments, and private businesses will also benefit from this gesture to boost businesses in the state.
He disclosed that the government is working out modalities for powering public schools and communities with renewable energy.
Efforts are underway to have the Abia State House of Assembly sign into law the electricity law, which has already been assented to, granting states the power to generate, transmit, and distribute power.
Responding to questions from journalists, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties, Dr (Mrs) Betty Obasi stated that numerous activities have been outlined to celebrate 2023 World Sight Day with the theme “Loving your eyes at your place of work” on Thursday, the 12th.
The event will feature free eye tests, the distribution of free eyeglasses, and the erection of a vision corridor in some motor parks, workers’ secretariats, and other public places as a means to reach out to the public.
Dr (Mrs.) Obasi emphasised that the administration is committed to upgrading health facilities in the state to a world-class standard.
She noted that the newly retrofitted eye centre at the Abia Specialist Hospital, Umuahia, has been repositioned to serve the people better.
