Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Gumel, has said that the joint security operatives have been warned to deal ruthlessly with any political party(ies) or any individual who attempted or sponsored any protest in the state.
This is just as Gumel said: “Any person or group of persons directly or indirectly found disrupting the peace of the state shall face the full wrath of the law.”
The joint security operatives, which include police, military, immigration, Navy, and other security personnel, declared this while the Kano CP addressed a world press conference.
Gumel, who addressed the press on Monday on behalf of other security personnel at the police station in Kano, said that they were on alert to deal decisively with whoever could undermine the prevailing peace in the state and to desist or blame himself if caught.
“You are welcome to Bompai, the headquarters of Kano State Police Command. This invitation is to update you on the security situation of the state, especially as it relates to peace, security, and peaceful coexistence after the declaration of the Kano State Governorship Appeal Court judgement.”
According to him, “It is a result of credible information at the Command’s disposal that revealed the intention of some groups of political party supporters using unconventional media platforms, mobilising people, and planning to enter the streets and position themselves at strategic locations in protest to the recent Kano State Governorship Appeal Court’s verdict, which was delivered on Friday, November 17, 2023.”
The intention of the protesters is to shut down the state in an action that may likely result in violence.
It’s on this note that the leadership of both the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) were invited to a meeting at the office of the Commissioner of Police in the presence of all the heads of security agencies in the state, advising them to be extra-careful, as whoever intends to conduct any protest or procession should do so in accordance with the provisions of the law.
The objective of the meeting was to maintain harmony and ensure that the political landscape in Kano State remained peaceful, adding that whoever attempts to disrupt the peace in the state will be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.
During the meeting, the leadership of the two political parties promised that no politically motivated clusters of people would be allowed at any location under whatever guise.
They also agreed that “their supporters would not engage in any mass action suggesting preparation for violent processions, protests, or celebrations that may trigger reactions; unguarded statements from their members likely to increase political tension or undermine the security arrangements and sanctity of the judiciary would be avoided.”
He hinted that it was resolved that they will remain committed on behalf of their parties to monitor, adhere to, and comply with the details contained in the peace accord signed before the Kano State Police Command, in which their parties will support all the arrangements put in place by the security apparatus to maintain peace and order, and that any person or group of persons directly or indirectly found disrupting the peace of the state shall face the full wrath of the law.
In today’s meeting, both the leadership of the NNPP and the APC agreed to reach out to their members not to get involved in the planned protest and to place national interest and patriotism above any other consideration.
In view of the above, we call on all residents to maintain calmness and avoid any form of unlawful gathering, protest, or procession that may trigger violence, as joint security forces have since been dispatched to strategic locations to safeguard peace and order throughout the state.
We must keep appreciating the peace-loving people of the state for their cooperation, support, and understanding, as the joint security agencies in the state remain committed to the protection of the lives and properties of all residents in the state.
On this note, I call on everyone to keep reporting any suspicious movement, person(s), or item(s) they come across to the nearest police station or through the following Kano State Police Command emergency contact numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, and 09029292926.
Speaking on the occasion, the NNPP state secretary, Alhaji Wada Ibrahim Dao, said they would agree upon the peace accord earlier signed to maintain peace law and order and not to cause any breach or sponsor any group of people to foment trouble.
“We are peace-loving people, saying that the state belongs to all of us. Election are not a do-or-die affair because only Allah gives power If God does not give power to somebody today, tomorrow may be his turn.”
