The Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) hosted its Sixth Annual Conference on February 19, 2025, drawing together leading experts, scholars, and industry professionals to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on global scientific and technological innovation.
Dr. Obichi Obiajunwa, a renowned innovation consultant and the Executive Director of Hutzpa Innovations, served as a lead speaker at the conference, sharing his expertise on the transformative potential of AI in shaping industries, policy frameworks, and economic development. Dr. Obiajunwa emphasised the need for Africa to take a proactive role in defining AI’s trajectory, ensuring that the continent actively contributes to the development of ethical, culturally relevant, and sustainable AI solutions rather than passively adopting global trends.
The conference was formally opened by the Acting Vice Chancellor of IAUE, Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, who highlighted the significance of academic leadership in fostering trust, collaboration, and the advancement of knowledge. He encouraged participants to leverage AI for innovation and productivity while cautioning against unethical practices such as plagiarism and academic fraud.
In his remarks, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the IAUE Governing Council, Chief (Barr.) Adokiye Amiesimaka, underscored the enduring presence of AI as an innovation that has been evolving for nearly 90 years. He stressed the importance of Africans controlling their own data and algorithms rather than allowing external forces to dictate AI’s impact on the continent.
The Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, Professor Ozioma Adaunwo Ekpete, described the conference as a momentous event exploring AI’s potential to revolutionize fields ranging from healthcare and education to finance and transportation. She emphasised that AI is not only augmenting human capabilities but also fostering international collaboration to address pressing global challenges.
Other distinguished speakers at the conference included Professor Esther Fomsi of the University of Port Harcourt, who outlined AI’s applications in education, scientific research, and healthcare, while also cautioning against ethical concerns and over-reliance on AI-driven decision-making. Professor Chidiebere Ugwu, also from the University of Port Harcourt, provided insights into AI’s role in research and its ability to drive significant advancements across various disciplines.
The Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee, Associate Professor Nduka Wonu, expressed gratitude to all participants and reiterated the event’s purpose as a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the development of innovative solutions to global challenges.
The event featured a cultural display by the University Seaside Theatre troupe, which presented a thought-provoking performance on the impact of AI, as well as an award ceremony recognising outstanding faculty members.
Dr. Obichi Obiajunwa’s presentation at the conference reinforced the urgency for Africa to take ownership of its AI journey by fostering homegrown innovation, strengthening policy frameworks, and investing in talent development. As AI continues to reshape industries worldwide, the discussions and insights from this conference are expected to inspire further research, policy action, and strategic collaborations in Nigeria and beyond.
