The widow of General Johnson Umunnakwe Aguyi-Ironsi, the first Military Head of State, Mrs Victoria Nwanyiocha Aguyi-Ironsi is dead. She died at the age of 98.
Sources told Tribune Online that Mrs Anuyi-Ironsi died early Monday morning,
Born on 21st November 1923, Lady Ironsi was the second First Lady of Nigeria from 16 January 1966 to 29 July 1996.
She married Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi General Aguiyi-Ironsi, who was killed in Ibadan in a counter coup led by the Lt. Col Yakubu Gowon and Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma on July 29, 1966, alongside his host, the then Military Administrator of Western Region, Col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi, in Ibadan, as a student of Holy Rosary Convent School, Okigwe in 1953 at the aged of 16.
At her Ogurube Layout, Umuahia residence, the son, Ambassador Thomson Aguiyi-Ironsi could not be seen, however, when contacted by telephone, he simply said he would be speaking soon.
After the death of her husband, Lady Aguiyi-Ironsi never remarried.
