Teachers at the state-owned Ambrose Alli University (AAU) have disassociated themselves from the Congress of University Academics (CONUA).

The branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has disassociated itself from the faction of the local branch of the union.

Arising from a congress held yesterday at the institution to review the reports in some sections of the media which had AAU as one of the members of CONUA, a splinter group, the local chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Monday Igbafen and the Secretary, Dr Anthony Aigogun Aizebioje Coker noted that the said press reports, are misleading and do not reflect the position on ground at the school.

Igbafen said: “After an exhaustive discussion of the report, the Congress of ASUU AAU, Ekpoma, observed that the said press reports are misleading and do not reflect the position on ground at AAU.”

He added that the two persons who are lecturers at AAU identified as promoters of the so-called CONUA are members of ASUU, AAU Ekpoma but are currently “on suspension for transgressions against the union’s rules and ethics.”

Igbafen and Aizebioje said that aside from the two persons, there is no other academic staff at AAU who is known to belong to CONUA, adding that the overwhelming majority of the lecturers are solid members of ASUU.
