66 countries to participate in 7th edition of KILAF — Organizers

The 7th edition of the Kano Indigenous Languages of Africa Film Market and Festival (KILAF) is set to take place on 30th November, 2024, with an expected participation from about 66 countries.

The event will be chaired by Professor Emmanuel Emasealu, and the list of nominated films for KILAF ’24 Awards has been released.

Abdulkareem Mohammed, the KILAF Founder and Chief Executive Officer, announced the details during a press conference at the NUJ Press Centre, Kano.

He highlighted that KILAF is an annual film event aimed at promoting indigenous language films from the African continent and encouraging their cross-border sales.

The festival has attracted 510 global film entries from 66 countries, with 430 entries coming from 35 African nations. Out of these, 57 films from 16 countries have been nominated for the KILAF ’24 Film Competition across 17 categories.

The five-day event will feature various activities promoting interactive engagements, including a Welcome Dinner hosted by the Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Additionally, there will be a KILAF ’24 Conference with the theme: “Forging Cultural Identity in a Multilingual Africa: The Role of Indigenous Language Films,” in collaboration with the Faculty of Communication, Bayero University.

Master Classes focusing on capacity building opportunities from ‘Script 2 Screen,’ organized by Dr. Victor Okhai, President of the Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN), and a Women in Media Business Summit chaired by the Minister of Culture, Arts and Creative Economy, Hajiya Hannatu Musa Musawa, are also scheduled.

The summit will be presented by Atusasiire Barbara, Managing Director of Tassle Films, in collaboration with Shafana Innovative Hub, an entrepreneur developmental NGO based in Kano.
