Valentine’s Day often brings expectations of closeness, affection, and shared plans. When a relationship is heading toward a breakup, the signs usually show long before the actual conversation happens. While none of these signals should be taken in isolation, noticing several of them at the same time may suggest that something is wrong.

  • S/he suddenly avoids conversations about Valentine’s plans
  • Communication becomes less frequent and less meaningful
  • S/he becomes emotionally distant
  • Your partner picks fights or becomes easily irritated
  • Your partner stops talking about the future

In this article, Tribune Online discusses five signs that may indicate plans are ongoing to end the relationship before Valentine’s Day.

S/he suddenly avoids conversations about Valentine’s plans

If your partner changes the subject whenever Valentine’s Day comes up or gives vague responses about plans, it could be a red flag. Someone who is emotionally invested usually wants to discuss how the day will be spent, even if the plans are simple. Avoidance may mean he does not see a future that includes celebrating the occasion together.

Communication becomes less frequent and less meaningful

When texts, calls, or messages reduce without a clear reason, it often signals emotional withdrawal. You may notice shorter replies, delayed responses, or a lack of interest in conversations that once mattered to both of you. This shift usually happens when someone is slowly detaching from the relationship.

S/he becomes emotionally distant

Emotional distance can show up as less affection, fewer compliments, or a general lack of concern about your feelings. If he or she no longer asks about your day, avoids deep conversations, or seems uninterested in emotional connection, it may suggest your partner has already checked out mentally.

Your partner picks fights or becomes easily irritated

A sudden rise in arguments over small issues can be a sign that he or she is trying to create distance or justify his or her feelings. Some people subconsciously push their partners away when they are considering ending a relationship. Constant irritation may reflect unresolved emotions or guilt.

Your partner stops talking about the future

When discussions about plans disappear, it can be telling. If he or she once spoke about upcoming events, shared goals, or long-term ideas and now avoids such topics, it may indicate that he or she no longer sees the relationship beyond the present moment.

While these signs do not always guarantee a breakup, they should not be ignored. Open and honest communication remains the healthiest way to understand what is happening. If something feels off, having a calm conversation may provide clarity and help you prepare emotionally for whatever comes next.
