THE matriculating students of the Newgate College of Health Technology, a foremost Private Health Institution in Minna, Niger State, yesterday Matriculated 247 National Diploma students and an additional 20 for Higher National Diploma in Public Health Nursing.
At the ceremony held at the Conference Hall of the College, opposite Talba Housing Estate, off Minna – Bida road, the Provost of the College, Dr Felix Edozie Odiah, in his remarks at the occasion said that the National Diploma students were admitted into various departments of the College such as Community Health Extension Workers (CHEW), Environmental Health Technology, Health Information Management, Nutrition and Dietetics including Medical Laboratory Technician among others.
Speaking further, he said these departments were equipped with Ultra modern Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Laboratory that houses no fewer than 30 Computer Workstations for teaching students.
He expressed the hope that when the matriculating students would be graduating from the College, that they would have been highly developed with practical skills both in their respective areas of studies as well as being computer literates.
Dr Odiah pointed out that the development around the College also extends to human capital, stressing that the Institution has vigorously undertaken the training and retraining of its employees which included those in the academic and non-academic staff within and outside the country to upgrade their qualifications in their respective disciplines.
He, however, charged the matriculating students to be careful, remain law abiding citizens and focus more on their academics, warning that the College has banned indecent dressing, examination malpractices and what he described as ‘sorting’ saying, “that the College has also planned to deal decisively with all offenders as the consequence of examination malpractices is outright expulsion from the College”.
“My dear students, many of you are still young and energetic, therefore while you are here, try and enjoy yourselves and learn as if you will live forever
“And on the part of the staff of the College, this institution does not tolerate exploitation and intimidation of students.
“We have the students affairs division, any students with genuine complaints should not hesitate to reach out to this unit,” said the Provost.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the College’s Governing Council, Comrade Adams Erena said, Newgate College of Health Technology, Minna has grown over the years to be one of the best among its contemporaries in the training of Middle-Level Cadre of Health workers in consonance with best Global practices.
Comrade Erena, a former Secretary to the Government of Niger state, who was represented by a member of the Board, Mallam Abdulhameed A.A. Kady Kuta (mini) stated further that the institution has combined classroom tutorship with practical field experience in preparing her students to face the challenges being experienced in the 21st Century, especially, in the health sector, by collaborating with relevant bodies, agencies and organizations both within and outside the country.
This, he said, includes relevant stakeholders in the health cum-educational world in the institution’s quest to give her students, the very best they deserved.
Among the dignitaries present at the well attended matriculation ceremony were Mallam Datti Usman, former Registrar of the Federal University of Technology, (FUT) Minna, Dr (Mrs) Adaeze Okoli, the Guest Lecturer at the occasion as well as representative of the Niger state Ministry of Health and Hospital Services, Dr Abbas Liman among others.
