Last two months, Meta Platforms announced that Nigerians would be able to monetise their contents. They made the announcement after a meeting with the President of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
The new monetization is in addition to TikTok and other user-generated platforms that Nigerians make money from.
There is no doubt that Lagos houses the majority of the conventional and nonconventional content creators from Nigeria.
With a population of more than seventeen million citizens, Lagos remains Africa’s most populous city with ample opportunities for content creators. Once a federal capital of Nigeria, the city still retains its essence, from the cultural arc of the ocean, to the luxury building, highbrow building and many more.
Lagos State remains the most ideal place for entertainers. Long before the explosion of content creators, actors and actresses, music stars and entertainment key stakeholders already made the city the place of abode. Right now, it seems to be the time for content creators. And the smart ones among them have latched on to Lagos, milking whatever they can get from Lagos State.
Ola of Lagos who strung up from reviewing cars and their prices has become a force to reckon with in the world of content creation. The 1997-born influencer has captivated audiences with his unwavering determination, exceptional work ethic, and passion for automobiles which has set him apart in the Nigerian social media landscape. Today, Ola of Lagos has gone from reviewing cars to house and other luxuries.
Egungun of Lagos, an interviewer who’s genre I would classify as cringe, has interviewed the celebrity you can think of. Egungun of Lagos started his content career in 2018 with the use of the Yoruba Egungun masquerade and later diversifying into interviews.
“Damn! It’s massive baby” is a catchphrase that is popular in the Nigerian content space courtesy of the Egungun!
Egugun does Humanity content aswell whereby he helps the needy and those in needs and also create awareness to disorders and rare conditions of humans to those who have it so that people can assist them and also know more about that particular disorder.
Vlogging is not yet complete without The Lagos Tourist, Hamda Koya who used to work at an advertising agency in 2012 where she frequently collaborated with many digital creators for marketing campaigns. As someone who loved to explore places and document these via pictures and videos, she found the concept of being a creator fascinating and decided one day to try her hands at becoming one. This spontaneous experiment led to the birth of The Lagos Tourist giving birth to another of Lagos’ various exports.
For Hamda, working with brands as an early creator was smooth as she had already understood the environment and had built relationships with a lot of other marketers. Several brand collaborations came from her within her existing network, and attending various events within the niches she was interested in.
Social media has become one of the most effective ways for brands to reach newer markets, and digital creators who can lend their platforms are in high demand. Being an influencer or lifestyle content creator in a market like Nigeria is unpredictable, as there’s not a lot of structure but Lagos is a starting point.
