HEAD, Entrepreneurship Programme at the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Professor Bosede Lawal, has advised farmers to leverage irrigation farming as they can no longer rely on rainfed agriculture due to climate change.

Lawal gave the advice during the opening ceremony of an empowerment and training of youth and women on poultry, small ruminants value chain, irrigation and water managenent techniques in the South-West part of Nigeria, held on the premises of IAR&T, Moor Plantation, Ibadan, recently.

She noted that:”Climate change is real and farmers can no longer rely on rainfed agriculture for sustainable productivity. The need for farmers to leverage irrigation is of utmost importance. One of the major strategies of adapting to climate change is the use of irrigation and efficient water management techniques.

“As farmers, we need appropriate knowledge and skills to be able to plan production, prepare and appropriate quantity of water required to irrigate their farms. For agriculture to be sustainable land and water must be used efficiently to reduce the negative impact on the environment.”

One of the participants at the training, Mrs Latifat Ademola, commended the Fedral Government for putting together the training. She said:”I believe this training would assist in keeping the youths away from any form of social vice. I also want to advise my fellow women farmers to make use of the knowledge acquired here judiciously.”

Another participant, Alhaji Badmus Rasheed Abiodun from Ona-Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State, while appreciating the Federal Government, IAR&T and Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Senator Kola Balogun, for the opportunity to be part of the training, urged participants at the training to use whatever that is given to them as empowerment for the purpose they were being given.”
