Victims of the Holocaust: Why is January 27 an international day?

Have you ever asked the question: who are the victims of the Holocaust? In fact, what does the Holocaust mean? Well, you will finally have the answer in this article.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) celebrates the memories of the victims of Holocaust through music, art and testimonies. January 27 of every year was chosen as a remembrance day in honour of the Jewish victims massacred by Nazist.

The UN organization has been firm in addressing racism, antisemitism, and other forms of hatred that can lead to violence. The racial ideology of Nazist led to the killings of Jewish and others from 1941-1945. And that’s basically what’s now known as ‘Holocaust.’

The holocaust affected many countries; member states then decided to address the trauma and enact policies to promote education, and historical sites and maintain effective remembrance policies. The World Health Organization (WHO)  has established that about 10 percent of people who experience traumatic events will encounter serious mental health problems. Another 10 percent will have behavioural problems that would hinder them from functioning very well. Which could be insomnia, anxiety, and depression – they are the most common effects.

Anything that brings trauma or abnormality hinders self-growth, especially in children. The effect of violence can take a very long time or never be undone. However, reaching out to victims can be helpful and reduce its long-term effects.

How did the Holocaust impact?

  1. People become displaced which sometimes makes it difficult to go back home.
  2. Survivors live with traumatic experiences that create a bad impression in their minds about the world.
  3. Victims don’t get the chance to be educated; they only feel the need to survive and cater for themselves.
  4. Feelings of loneliness, abandonment, or not relevant are hard to overcome.
  5. It sometimes leads to attempting suicide.
