The residents of Amangwo Olokoro in Umuahia South LGA of Abia State are in mourning following the tragic killing of two of their fellow community members by unknown gunmen.

The incident occurred at around 9 am on Friday, June 23, 2023, along Arondizuigu road in Imo State.

The mourners, who were traveling in a Sienna car to attend a burial in Enugu State, were intercepted by the gunmen. The assailants blindfolded them and forcibly took them to a nearby village.

Surviving victims, who are still traumatized, shared their accounts anonymously, revealing that the gunmen shot one of them, Pastor Chukwuemeka Nwachukwu, when he questioned the armed men about their intentions. The village youth leader, Ifeanyi Onwunkwe, attempted to escape during the chaos but was also killed by the gunmen.

The victims further disclosed that the gunmen robbed them of their personal belongings, including phones and money. Surprisingly, the assailants did not damage their vehicle, which the victims used to return home.

In their grief, the victims shed tears and expressed their anguish. They revealed that the gunmen refused to release the bodies of the deceased and made threats against individuals who had voted in the recent 2023 general elections, particularly targeting Umuahia residents, for not adhering to the Monday sit-at-home order.

When approached for comment, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Abia State Command, ASP Chinaka Chioma Maureen, stated that no such report had been received. However, she clarified that the incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Imo State Command.
