Management of the Osun state university (UNIOSUN) has disclosed that a total sum of N58 million has been released to the institution by “Candida da Rocha Trust Fund” to promote research fellowship in accountancy.
The institution Vice-chancellor, Professor Labode Popoola who made this known at the 2020 edition of the Candido Da Rocha Annual Memorial Lecture that supposed to have happened last year but couldn’t because of the global pandemic, mentioned late Mrs Abimbola Aina Omololu Mulele, an educationist and a lawyer as the donor and the founder of the trust fund to add more values to the field of education.
At the lecture held at Olagunsoye Oyinlola auditorium of the university, the Vice-Chancellor however remarked that “We shall never be tired of appreciating late Mrs Abimbola Aina Omololu-Mulele whose philanthropic spirit was demonstrated by donating an initial sum of thirty-eight million naira and a recent additional twenty million naira ‘Candido Da Rocha Trust Fund’ to the Department of Accounting of the Osun State University in honour of her late grandfather, which is in recognition of her vision to advance the frontiers of knowledge in Accountancy as well as teaching through research in the field of Accounting.”
“The objective of the Trust Fund is to promote research fellowship in the field of accountancy and enhance the industry in the development of the society. This is a legacy worth emulating.”
The donor, before her death, said to have stated it her will that, the institution should be given the fund for research purposes after her death.
However, a scholarship award was thereby given to Miss Makinde Ruth Omolayo, a 200 level student in the department of accounting with the highest CPGA of (4.81) as at 2019/2020 session as part of the donor’s will.
The Guest lecturer, the Dean of the faculty of Management Sciences of the University of Benin, Professor Leslie Eyesan Dabor,in the lecture titled”Sustainable economic Recession growth and development during a recession: Practical lessons and Professional Accountants’ Solution” called on the governments and leadership bodies to effectively deploy research programmes in the field of Accounting to be able to reduce poverty and economic recession.
He further charged the Government to embrace transparency to improve economic growth and development while minimizing corruption.
In his lecture, “accounting has the potential to cure and curb recession and the proper deployment of accounting will limit the effect of recession on the economy and speed up recovery from recession.
“Our focus should be to deal with socio-lure and political oppositions to effective deployment accounting.”
He further noted that “When there is economic growth, there will be a poverty reduction. Wherever there is growth, society transforms. When there is growth, inequality reduces.
“Economic growth creates employment. It is the basis for human development. One can grow and not develop, but one can’t develop without growth. As the economy grows and human capacity develops, it develops the economy.
Higher level of income reduces infant mortality.”
The guest speaker added, “ethnic and religious sentiments should be removed through education because development cannot occur where such exists. He adds further that “development involves the empowerment of women, children and men. An increase in development increases life expectancy. It results in a high level of life expectancy. And Accounting plays an essential role in economic development.”
The Pro-Chancellor and the Governing Council Chairman of the University, Mallam Yusuf Olaolu Ali, SAN, charged Nigerians with closing remarks to maintain prudence in their personal life as it is a sign of success.
