Unemployed man charged with iPhone theft

A 30-year-old unemployed man, Dayo Olatipo, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos,  over alleged theft of an iPhone worth N250,000.

Olatipo, who resides at 5, Bran St., Fagba, Lagos, is facing charges of conspiracy and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, SP Raji Akeem, told the court that the defendant committed the offences with two other persons still at large, on April 15 at Oko-Oba Agege, Lagos.

Akeem said that the complaint, Mr Michael Chukwu, was on his way home when the defendant attacked him with a knife.

“The defendant and his cronies took the phone and fled the scene, but the defendant was later apprehended by some policemen on patrol, ” he said.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 411 stipulates two years’ jail term for conspiracy. while Section  287 provides three years’ imprisonment for stealing.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Layinka, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until June 3 for hearing.
