Two died from an outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus was confirmed in Kerala, a Southern state in India.

According to Kerala’s chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the authorities have taken preemptive measures to curb the spread, shutting down schools and mass-testing citizens for the disease.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Nipah is a zoonotic virus transmitted from animals to humans. It can also be transmitted through contaminated food or directly between people.

Symptoms often begin with a headache and drowsiness but quickly transform into a coma within a matter of days, attacking the respiratory organs.
There is currently no vaccine to combat the virus.

The WHO has tagged the virus as an epidemic threat, soliciting critical research into the virus.

According to CNN, this is the 4th time the Indian state has experienced an outbreak of the disease.
