Reports in the social media, last week, revealed the preparedness of the embattled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State to snatch power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2018. Names like Prince Albert Abiodun Adeogun, Hon. Wole Oke of House of Representatives, Mr. A. Adewopo and Chief Iyiola Omisore were published as those aspiring to contest the governorship election on the party’s platform.
Records show that Omisore has been in the struggle without success for two times. The opponents blackmailed him, accusing him of allegedly having a hand in the murder of Chief Bola Ige. This is despite his acquittal by the court of law. The senator has even sued the Inspector General of police, claiming N12 billion for malicious prosecution. The case is still pending in court.
Prince Adeogun, who is from Osun East with Omisore and also from the same town, was reported to be interested in the race. Both Oke and Adeogun are currently in the House of Representatives. The factional state chairman of the party, Honourable Soji Adagunodo, has confirmed that more aspirants are likely to surface for the race, pointing out that this was in tandem with their constitutional rights. Adagunodo said that since there was a guideline to decide who carries the party flag, the party executive would organise shadow election to sort things out. He was of the conviction that primaries would produce the best credible material from PDP to face candidates of other parties.
Since PDP is currently the most formidable opposition except a mega parties emerges, it behoves the party to come out with the most credible candidate without any blemish or indictment which other party candidates may exploit to PDP’s detriment. Many people want APC to be flushed out of office in the state, which has not got the best in the last two years of the government in the state.
