Taraba killings: Youth group begs Gov Kefas to intervene

The Wurkun Youth Association of Nigeria (WUYAN) appealed to Governor Agbu Kefas on Tuesday to intervene in the continuous attacks and killings of their people in the Karim-Lamido local government area of Taraba by suspected Karimjo youths.

Mr Hussaini S. Zuppai, state president of the association, held a press conference in Jalingo. He wondered why the Karimjos, with whom the Wurkuns had coexisted for years and intermarried, had chosen the path of unrest against the Wurkuns in recent times.

He appealed to the parties involved to sheathe their swords and give peace a chance, emphasising that differences are never resolved on the battlefield.

“Both my people (the Wurkun) and Karimjo have no reason to fight each other. We have coexisted for years and intermarried.

“Whatever the case may be, we wish to appeal to the parties involved to cease fire and allow peace a chance for the development of our area.

“We also wish to appeal to Governor Agbu Kefas to intervene in the situation and set up an independent commission of inquiry into the crisis. It’s essential to ensure the implementation of its findings as a sure way to lasting peace in the area.

“While we implore all stakeholders of Karinjo ethnicity to call their youths in order to avoid further escalation of the crisis, we also appeal to Governor Kefas that, in the interim, the state government should provide relief materials to the displaced people to alleviate the effects of the crisis,” the group appealed.

The Nigerian Tribune reported that a fresh crisis broke out last week in the Karim-Lamido local government area of Taraba.

It was gathered that suspected Karimjo youths launched an attack on communities belonging to the Wurkun ethnic group, resulting in the loss of lives and properties and the displacement of scores of people.
