Sustainable power supply key to greater Lagos vision ― Commissioner

The indispensability of a stable and sustainable power supply to the realization of the vision for a greater Lagos is premised on the six thematic areas of THEMES Agenda, Commissioner for the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr Olalere Odusote, has said.

According to him, THEMES is the acronym for Traffic Management and Transportation, Health and Environment, Education and Technology Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy, Entertainment and Tourism and Security and Governance.

Speaking at the Lags State Electricity Policy Stakeholder Consultation Session, hosted by the ministry on Wednesday, Odusote opined that the initiative would serve as a key driver for the socio-economic development of Lagos State.

He maintained that the fact that Lagos State is the commercial nerve centre and the most populated state in Nigeria, informed the decision of the government to develop a 30-year Development Plan towards the attainment of universal access to electricity, being one of the largest megacities in the world

In a paper presented at the event, held virtually, the Managing Director of Excredite Consulting Limited, Mr Eyo Ekpo, who is also a consultant to the state government, averred that “electricity reliability for Lagos State means to supply that is available to any customer in the state electricity market in the desired quality and as when needed’.’

While highlighting the long journey of Lagos State in securing a stable supply of electricity, the consultant also identified the way forward towards electricity reliability as well as the demerits of alternative use of power supply.

The consultant, challenged the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Ministry of Finance and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) to work out rules aimed at rapidly shifting residential population to solar.

He added that with the proposed new electricity policy, owners of generating sets over 100KVA would be incentivized to switch to cleaner fuels.

He advocated for the need for the state government to work with financial services and gas suppliers to develop a Lagos’ gas supply market, saying that the energy efficiency and demand part management schemes will be coordinated by the ministry.

Speaking on what the state government needs to do to guarantee sustainable power supply, Expo advised the state government to institutionalise and execute the state integrated resource plan.

” Government should also support improvement in infrastructure to drive wider access to reliable power supply, reduce the cost of living and doing business in Lagos.

“Additionally, there’s need to secure stakeholders’ buy-in to support electricity market development aspirations by focusing on attaining short- and medium-term electricity goal,” the consultant submitted.
