As a means of giving back to the school, the 1981 set of St. Patrick’s Grammar School (SPACO), Bashorun, Ibadan, on Tuesday donated books worth millions of naira to its alma mater.
The presentation of the items, which took place at the school premises, was attended by the old students and the current students. Other items donated include agricultural and sanitation items.
Speaking at the presentation, the president of the 1981 set, Mr Kayode Odeyale, said the gesture was borne out of their desire to boost the standard of education in the school.
He encouraged current students to focus on achieving success to improve their lives.
He said, “We are presenting books recommended by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) as well as agricultural and sanitation tools to our alma mater.
“The idea behind this gesture is borne out of our desire to add value to a great school that has given us the solid foundation to be who we are today by the grace of God. Our quest for a virile bridge for access to quality education in our former school is receiving a boost this day from what we are gathered here to do.
“Our desire to affect our school positively is borne out of the fact that once you train a child, you lock the gates of crime and criminal tendencies because an educated mindset is a great asset in building a virile society.
“Our set also deemed it fit to give back to SPACO to let the current students know that we still have kind-hearted Nigerians willing to touch the lives of others.
“We chose to present these items in the month of March to coincide with St. Patrick’s month and even during the Christian Lent and Easter celebrations, as both events connote love for mankind, which is needed by our country at this period.”
Odeyale also appealed to the federal and state governments to put more attention and budget more funds towards the educational development of the leaders of tomorrow.
The set also announced monetary rewards to some of the best students at the end of their academic session.
In his address, Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Professor Salihu Adelabu, lauded the initiative, saying the event signified the enduring bond between the school, the alumni, and the commitment to enhancing education as well as good hygiene in our society.
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Director of Secondary Education, Ministry of Education, Mr Olayinka Akanji, said: “I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the alumni association for their generous donation of books and sanitation tools to the school.
Your contribution will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the learning environment and the overall well-being of the students. Your dedication to giving back to your alma mater is commendable and serves as an inspiration to others.
“As we all know, education is the cornerstone of progress and development in any society; it empowers individuals, opens doors of opportunity, and fosters innovation and growth.
On our part as a government, we are committed to ensuring that every child has access to quality education, regardless of their background or circumstances. Initiatives such as this are vital in supporting our efforts towards achieving this goal.”
In his remarks, the principal of the school, Mr. Tope Aderounmu, thanked the ex-students for their gesture while assuring them they would make judicious use of the resources provided for them.
