In a strategic move set to redefine the digital entertainment landscape in West Africa, MultiChoice, now a CANAL+ company, has officially announced that the critically acclaimed titles that defined the Showmax era will transition to a new permanent home. Starting April 1, the stories that captured the hearts of millions across the continent will be integrated into DStv Stream, creating a unified powerhouse for African storytelling and global broadcast excellence.
This transition comes as the standalone Showmax service prepares to wind down its operations on April 30. To ensure that African audiences do not lose access to their favourite award-winning dramas and reality hits, MultiChoice has developed a dedicated Showmax section within the DStv Stream application. This curated space is designed to bridge the gap between traditional appointment viewing and the modern demand for flexible, on-demand streaming.
Kemi Omotosho, the Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, emphasized that this evolution is a direct response to the changing habits of the Nigerian consumer. According to Omotosho, the move reflects a long-term commitment to the streaming frontier, effectively merging the world of live television with the vast library of on-demand content that modern viewers have come to expect. She noted that while the platform may be changing, the core mission of championing African voices remains the heartbeat of the company.

The success of Showmax was built on a foundation of high-stakes drama and cultural relevance. Nigerian favourites such as the gripping gold-mining saga Wura, the empowering journeys of Flawsome, the epic historical narrative of ‘Cheta M’, and the glamorous, high-octane drama of The ‘Real Housewives of Lagos’ have become household staples. For existing subscribers, the transition is designed to be as seamless as possible. Customers currently holding Showmax subscriptions will be migrated to the DStv Stream Compact package. This migration allows users to continue enjoying their favourite shows at no extra cost until May 31, providing a generous window for fans to acclimatise to the new interface. Furthermore, the company has promised that the library will continue to grow, with more movies and series slated for addition in the coming weeks.
One of the most significant advantages of this consolidation is the “best of both worlds” value proposition. While the previous Showmax model was primarily focused on mobile-first on-demand content, the DStv Stream platform offers a more robust technical infrastructure. Subscribers on the Compact, Compact Plus, and Premium packages will now have the ability to toggle between the intense drama of a Showmax Original and the adrenaline-pumping action of live sports.
As the April 1 launch date approaches, the Nigerian creative industry looks on with optimism. The consolidation suggests a more sustainable model for funding big-budget African originals by leveraging the massive subscriber base of the DStv ecosystem. For the Nigerian viewer, the message is clear: the era of jumping between multiple apps and subscriptions is ending, replaced by a single, streamlined gateway to the best entertainment the world and the continent have to offer.
