Zamfara State Government in Collaboration with a Non-Governmental Organization”International Alert” has organized a sensitisation workshop for women groups with 120 participants on Sexual Gender Base Violence (SGBV) in the state.
The one-day sensitization workshop was held on Thursday at the Command Guest House, Gusau, in collaboration with Zamfara State Ministry of Women, Children and Social Development in the state.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, the state Commissioner for women, children and Social Development Dr Nafisa Maradun who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry Dr Habibu Yalwa Called on participants to listen and use the workshop to change norms and practices of sexual Gender Base Violence in the state.
“We are in the open global, world that is now changing, let us be active in the participation use our Senses and promote the practice of Gender Base Violence, practices that promote SGBV.”
Earlier on, the senior program officer of SGBV, Mr Stephen John disclosed that SGBV has harmful cultural practices and norms.
Mr Stephen further explained that the workshop was aimed at preventing and addressing harmful cultural norms and practices that promote SGBV in the State.
“Many women don’t know the role of mothers in safeguarding and protecting their children against Sexual Gender Based Violence.”
John stated that understanding the laws against SGBV activities would help to support survivors of SGBV in the State.
He disclosed that 120 participants were drawn from Gusau, Tsafe and Birnin Magaji local government areas to Acquaint them with SGBV prevention and address harmful Cultural norms and practices that promote SGBV in the state.
“Identifying the harmful cultural practices and norms that promote Sexual Gender Based in the communities would help solve the problem”, he disclosed.
During the sensitisation, the Director National Orientation Agency (NOA) Zamfara state Aminu Ibrahim presented an introduced agreement form by NOA to the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Development,” an agreement to prosecute sexual Gender Base Violence in the state.”
Those groups at the occasion included the Federation of Muslims Women of Nigeria (FoMWAN), Zamfara State Association of Women Lawyers, and Women groups in the state.
