The House of Representatives on Sunday refuted reports that the leadership is under external influence or pressure regarding the appointment of Chairmanship and Deputy Chairmanship positions of its Standing Committees.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Chairman of the Special Ad-hoc Committee on Media, Hon. Ikenga Ikeagwuonu, representing Ideato Federal Constituency of Imo State, the lawmakers dismissed the reports and rumours as false.
They emphasised that the Selection Committee, set up by Speaker Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, will carry out its duties fairly, justly, and competently without any external influence.
Hon. Ikeagwuonu assured that the 10th House, led by Hon. Abbas Abbas, is prioritising the interests of all 360 members in the selection process of lawmakers to head the various committees.
He said: “I assure you that the reports circulating on social media, claiming that the leadership is under external influence or pressure regarding the appointment of chairmanship and deputy chairmanship of the standing committees, are false. It’s not true at all.
“Last month, Mr Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, constituted a Selection Committee to recommend members for appointment as members of House Standing Committees.
“The Selection Committee, headed by him, has one member from each of the 36 States. The committee members are competent and are carrying out their responsibilities with fairness and justice in mind.
“The 10th House, led by Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, is committed to representing the interests of all 360 members in the selection of lawmakers who will head the various committees or serve as members.
“Therefore, I appeal to the public to disregard any reports of external influence or pressure and allow the committee members to carry out their duties.”
