Rainy season: Ekiti govt cautions residents, motorist to prevent flooding

The Ekiti State government has cautioned motorists and residents of the state on the need to be mindful during the rainy season to prevent the devastating effects of flooding.

The caution was coming few days after panic gripped the residents of Ureje, a suburb of Ado Ekiti metropolis, as residents woke up to see a lifeless body of a man inside flooded Ureje River, which prompted Governor Biodun Oyebanji to deploy the delegation of the deputy governor, Chief Monisade Afuye, the commissioner for environment and natural resources, Mrs Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe and other members of the cabinet.

The commissioner for Environment and natural resources, in a statement on Monday in Ado-Ekiti, commiserated with the family of a deceased motorcyclist over the incident.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this difficult time.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life due to the flooding in Ureje. Such incidents remind us of the importance of prioritizing safety and taking precautions during adverse weather conditions,” Aluko-Ajisafe said.

Speaking on the need for the residents to exercise caution and avoid any acts that could trigger disaster, the commissioner said, “The safety and well-being of our residents are of utmost importance. We urge everyone to stay informed, stay safe, and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families.”

The ministry reiterated its commitment to implementing measures to mitigate flooding and enhance disaster preparedness across the state.

She assured residents that the government would continue to prioritize initiatives aimed at safeguarding lives and properties from the impact of natural disasters.

Ajisafe maintained, ” the importance of community cooperation in promoting safety and resilience in the face of environmental challenges and residents should support government efforts and to work together to create a safer and more resilient Ekiti State.
