The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has achieved a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts against violent crime, apprehending a suspected member of a tricycle robbery syndicate and recovering two stolen vehicles.

The suspect, identified as Ogbonnaya Kalu, was arrested on February 24, 2026, following what the Command described as credible and actionable intelligence, recovering a stolen tricycle with registration number JRC 139 QZ from him at the time of arrest.

Further intelligence-led operations led to the recovery of a second stolen tricycle with registration number KNE 747 QJ, confirming what authorities say is the suspect’s active involvement in a criminal gang targeting commercial tricycle operators.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, preliminary investigations revealed that the syndicate specializes in ambushing tricycle operators, attacking them and dispossessing them of their vehicles, saying that often their primary source of livelihood.

Police said the activities of the group had created fear and economic hardship among transport operators and residents in parts of the state.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Baba Mohammed Azare, has ordered an intensified manhunt for other members of the gang, with a view to dismantling the syndicate and recovering additional stolen property.

“The era of terrorizing law-abiding citizens in Akwa Ibom State is over,” the Command stated, warning criminal elements to desist or face decisive action.

The suspect has been remanded in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Command reiterated its commitment to the protection of lives and property and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing security operations in the state
