Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has announced plans to roll out financial grants to traders, saying disbursement will begin immediately after the completion of the reconstruction of the burnt section of the Sokoto Central Market.
The governor made the disclosure on Thursday evening while hosting leaders of the Traders’ Association to an Iftar at the Presidential Lodge in Sokoto.
Aliyu said the state government had concluded all necessary arrangements for the grants, describing the intervention as part of efforts to stimulate commercial activities and strengthen small-scale businesses.

“We are only waiting for the completion of the reconstruction of the burnt section of the market so that we can commence the disbursement of the grants,” he said.
“It would not make sense to give someone a grant when he does not have a shop to operate from.”
The governor expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work at the market, reiterating his administration’s commitment to revitalising commerce in the state.
“As a responsible government, we are committed to doing whatever it takes to boost commerce in the state,” he stated.
Aliyu also acknowledged the support of traders during his electioneering campaign, noting that the business community played a significant role in his electoral victory. He assured them that his administration would continue to prioritise policies that promote economic growth.
In response to criticism of his government, the governor said he welcomes constructive feedback from well-meaning citizens, stressing that it would not deter him from implementing transformative projects.
“Our achievements are visible; they are everywhere. Take, for instance, how Sokoto city is being transformed into an attraction site,” he said, adding that visitors now troop into the city at night to admire its new look.
In his remarks, prominent businessman, Alhaji Bello Bulaky, commended the governor for awarding the reconstruction contract for the burnt section of the market and for reclaiming the facility after it was previously sold to a commercial bank by the immediate past administration.
He said the move restored hope to traders and prevented the collapse of many businesses.
Other speakers, including Alhaji Chika Sarkin Gishiri, Malam Nafiu Dan Haja, Bashir Nuhu and Malam Mukhtar, also lauded the governor for what they described as people-oriented projects across the state and pledged continued support for his administration.
