A middle-aged man who had been parading himself as Senator Andy Uba, a serving Senator has been nabbed by Lagos State police command over extortion of money from unsuspecting job seekers.
An informed police source told the Nigerian Tribune yesterday that the suspect identified as Asabor Joel was apprehended in Ogbara, Delta State on Monday by detectives attached to Lagos state police command following a tip-off.
According to our source police began a manhunt for the suspect following a petition routed through the Police Area Command, Area “D” Mushin by a legal firm that his client, one Chinelo Nnedmna of No 52 Folarin Street Mushin has swindled a sum of N300,000 through a Facebook account sometime in December 2017.
According to the complainant, the suspect had opened a Facebook account with Senator Andy Uba’s name with his picture.
During one of the chat, the complainant said that the Suspect presented himself as a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who was in a position to secure employment for him with the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.
It was further alleged that the suspect directed the victim to pay a certain amount of money into a dedicated account with the First Bank Account out of which he could only be paid a sum of N330,000.
According to our source, after the payment, the suspect reportedly gave the victim a telephone number to one Honourable Nkiruka, a member of the House for the employment letter.
Our Source said that failure to secure the employment letter prompted the victim to petition Nigeria police.
The source confirmed that the suspect who is now undergoing intensive interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID had already confessed to committing the crime.
Efforts to speak with the State Police Public Relations Officers, CSP Chike Oti on the matter proved abortive, however, a Senior Officer in the Command, who spoke with our reporter under anonymity confirmed the story, saying “we have the fake Senator suspect in our net”.
