Police arraign 5 men for allegedly beating up farmer, brother

THE police on Wednesday arraigned five men, who allegedly beat up a farmer and his younger brother on his farm in Benue, in a Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The police charged Baaki Faga, Fidelis Tsav, Kingsley Jabela, Dennis Ude and Terwase Achagh with criminal conspiracy, assault, hurt, mischief, inciting disturbance and theft punishable under sections 97, 266, 247, 329, 116 and 288 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue, 2004.

The Prosecution Counsel, Sgt Friday Kanshio, told the court that the case was transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters, Aliade, via a letter to the State CIID, Makurdi for a thorough investigation.

Kanshio further said that the letter stated that the victim, Terwase Aerkera, who is from Tse-Agon Village in Gwer-West reported the matter at the Aliade Police Station on June 19.

He alleged that the defendants and other persons, at large, attacked Aerkera and his younger brother, Ayange, on their farm.

Kanshio alleged that the defendants also destroyed a N182, 000, sewing machine, 20 containers of herbicides and knapsack spraying machines.

He alleged that when the defendants were arrested, the police recovered 20 containers of herbicides and four knapsack spraying machines from them.

The prosecution informed the court that investigation was still in progress and asked for a date for mention.

After the charges were read to them, they pleaded not guilty.

Chief Magistrate Isaac Ajim admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N100,000 each with one surety each in like sum.

Ajim adjourned the matter until Sept 4, for further mention.
