Following the gruesome killing of a 300-level student of University of Jos (UNIJOS), Mr Rinji Bala, by suspected security men during a lockdown hour, the whole Holshe community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State was thrown into confusion and mourning on Wednesday.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that the 20-year-old UNIJOS student was arrested along with five others by security operatives along the National Library area for breaching the lockdown being observed in the state and were whisked to a security post where they were mercilessly tortured.
An eye witness, who was part of those arrested declared: “I and five others were whisked to Sector 1 headquarters of the Special Task Force near Jos Zaria Road stadium in a military patrol van. They did not tell us our offence but tortured us for over an hour before releasing us.
“At the gate, some soldiers asked us to run. When we took off, they opened fire and Rinji fell a few metres from the gate. I stopped to help him up but a soldier came close, with his gun pointed at me, but turned back when another soldier shouted ‘ceasefire.’”
When Nigerian Tribune visited the home of the deceased, there were lots of people who thronged the family house to sympathise with the parents who were unable to speak as a result of the unfortunate incident.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ubah Gabriel, said: “I heard of the incident, but I don’t know the circumstances surrounding his death but not by the police.”
However, all efforts to get the media officer of Operations Safe Haven, Major Ibrahim Shittu, proved abortive, several phone calls put across to him were not answered.
