The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has praised President Bola Tinubu for signing the South-South Development Commission Bill into law, describing it as a historic step toward addressing the region’s socio-economic and environmental challenges.
In a statement released by its National Chairman, Ambassador Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, made available to the Tribune Online on Wednesday. PANDEF expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and commended the National Assembly for its swift passage of the bill.
The enactment of the South-South Development Commission (SSDC), according to PANDEF, underscores the government’s commitment to equitable regional development and provides a structured framework to tackle the long-standing developmental concerns of the South-South geopolitical zone.

“This landmark action reinforces the Federal Government’s dedication to fostering equitable regional development across Nigeria. Specifically, it addresses the unique social, environmental, and developmental challenges confronting our region,” the statement partly read.
PANDEF emphasised the need for President Tinubu to appoint competent, experienced, and credible individuals to lead the new Commission, ensuring it complements the efforts of South-South Governors in driving sustainable development.
The Forum also highlighted environmental degradation caused by oil exploration, as well as the infrastructural deficits that have long plagued the region. It urged the SSDC to prioritise these pressing issues to improve the quality of life for South-South residents.
“We reiterate the urgency of tackling environmental remediation due to the adverse impacts of oil and gas production, and the acute deficit in basic infrastructure. These challenges pose existential threats to the South-South and should be prioritized in the Commission’s agenda,” it added.
Beyond development concerns, PANDEF also called on President Tinubu to facilitate the immediate reinstatement of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his Deputy, and the State Assembly, following their controversial suspension.
“In light of widespread appeals and genuine concerns regarding the suspension of the Rivers State Governor, Deputy Governor, and State Assembly, PANDEF earnestly appeals to President Tinubu to facilitate the immediate restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State.”
PANDEF reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Federal Government to advance the South-South region, while urging sustained dialogue and collaboration to ensure the SSDC delivers on its mandate.“Once again, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to President Tinubu and the National Assembly for this significant milestone.
“PANDEF looks forward to continued collaboration, progress, and peace as we collectively strive toward the holistic development of the South-South region and Nigeria at large.”
