Oyo: Gov Makinde’s wife, others become knights of Methodist

Makinde’s wife, Tamunominini, retired Ogun Perm Sec, Odulate, Sanusi, and 105 others have been conferred with Methodist Church of Nigeria Knight awards.

The Methodist Church of Nigeria bestowed the Knights of John, Charles Wesleys, Order and Member of the Order of the Wesleys on these recipients in recognition of their selfless service to the growth of the church, contributions to the nation’s economy, and other spheres of human endeavour.

The ceremony, which took place at the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Wesley Cathedral, Elekuro in Ibadan South East local government area, was attended by notable personalities from various walks of life.

Governor Seyi Makinde, represented at the occasion by his Executive Assistant on Administration, Mr Idowu Ogedengbe, addressed the newsmen during the Recognition of Service and Award of Merit at Wesley Cathedral, Elekuro.

He urged religious leaders to focus on character-building as a solution to the rising crime waves nationwide.

He described the knightship as the highest honour in the Methodist Church of Nigeria and encouraged the clergy to collaborate with governments at all levels in correcting the ills of society.

He stated, “The Church needs to be more visible and outspoken when it comes to enhancing the standard of righteousness, but we have not done badly; it would have been worse than what we are seeing now.

I believe that the commitment of faithful men, emphasizing the place of righteousness and people doing what is acceptable for nation-building, is what is responsible for the progress we have made so far.

We need to encourage more voices within the church community to speak, to call people to order, and to enhance and reach the standard for righteousness among the people because it is the only righteousness that exalts the nation.”

Princess Iyabode Orebowale Odulate, one of the recipients, also urged the youths to be more dedicated to the works of God and to shun all vices.

She expressed that Nigerian youths are not as wayward as portrayed on social media, arguing that they are more industrious and dedicated to their endeavours.

She emphasized her role as an education officer, having raised many youths to an enviable standard and reshaped their lives to make rightful impacts in society.

In his sermon, Rt. Revd Dennis Mark encouraged the recipients to see the award as a call to duty, stating that the reward of good works is more work.

However, he reminded them that the award cannot stand in place of atonement for sins, as atonement for sins came as a result of the finished works on the Cross of Calvary.

He emphasized the importance of being productive in the vineyard of God and manifesting the business of the kingdom.
