The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has strongly condemned the violence in Osun State, vowing to bring those responsible to justice.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Force’s Police Public Officer (FPPRO) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police emphasised that violence threatens democracy and the wellbeing of citizens.
The unrest, which has led to the destruction of property and the loss of lives, has prompted the Nigeria Police Force to take decisive action to restore peace.
The statement reads partly, “The Nigeria Police Force has condemned, in strong terms, the incidents that have disrupted peace and safety in the state, and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
To curb further unrest, the IGP has ordered the deployment of additional tactical squads to Osun State. “The perpetrators of these criminal acts will be fished out and be caused to face the consequences of their unwarranted ill-fated acts,” the statement continued.
The police urged residents to remain calm as efforts to restore normalcy continue. Osun leaders and stakeholders were also called upon to shun violence and respect judicial processes.
“The judiciary remains the ultimate arbiter of all electoral disputes and political actors must respect and abide by its rulings, upholding the rule of law and democratic principles,” the statement noted.
The Force reaffirmed its commitment to preventing further disorder, warning that lawlessness, hooliganism, and anarchy would not be tolerated.
“The situation in Osun will be closely monitored, and measures will be enforced to ensure a safe environment for all residents,” the police assured.
