Do we care to know the number of almajiri schools that exist, cutting across almost all the Local Government Areas with large size in the north just for regulation, monitoring or little attention? Whether anyone likes it or not, the almajiri children have been working and seeking help from all groups helplessly irrespective of ethnic or religious affiliation. I therefore see Rev Mathew Kukah’s idea to train 10million almajiri children as a welcome challenge because the responsibility of making the society better for all should be everyone’s interest.

No doubt, the “kukah’ scheme” for almajiri will raise questions of where are the wealthy Muslims and leaders of the north and the parents of the children? Where is the government? I wish that the fear of losing a child to a non-Muslim as Kukah can diminish the parent’s pride and create a chance for attitudinal change that prevent abuse and not produce cure.
