The Police Service Commission has warned all its rank and file officers, including the senior police bosses, to stop extorting the members of the public so as to save their jobs just as four police officers guilt of extortion in Lagos were dismissed.
Another three police officers serving in Ogun state; Ikhanorba Lucky, Paul Sunday and Edwin Ekeogu, were also dismissed for extorting the sum of N153, 000 from a student of Lagos State University. I expect other police officers to see the dismissal of their colleagues as a lesson to stop extorting.
As it is, many Nigerians are struggling to survive and police officers should not add to their burden. This is the right time for the force to monitor the activities of the dismissed officers as they are trained on how to handle gun. Now that they are jobless, they may go fully into crime.
I appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to increase the salary of police officers to discourage them from extorting the public. A word is enough for the wise. Officers that love their jobs should desist from extortion.
