Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University College of Medicine (COOUCOM) has inducted 85 medical doctors who have successfully completed their necessary training into practice.
While inducting the fresh doctors at the Histopathology Auditorium, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital COOUTH, Amaku-Awka, the vice chancellor of the university, Professor Greg Nwakoby, urged the newly inducted medical doctors to always observe professionalism in their practices.
He also called on the new medical doctors to handle every patient with care and seriousness.
According to him, the medical profession is meant for those who are called into the profession and not for ‘all comers,’ adding that, “being a medical doctor is not about making money but serving humanity and saving lives.”
He also expressed confidence in the quality of the medical doctors being produced by the institution, stating the hi-tech equipment and the quality of staff in the institution.
Speaking at the occasion, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Dr Joe Akabuike, said that despite the COVID-19 pandemic and resident doctors’ strike, the institution produced quality and sound medical doctors.
“The institution is doing very well and that is the reason why most of its doctors are poached by foreign countries immediately after graduation,” Dr Akabuike said.
In his response, the provost of the college, Professor Emmanuel Ojiyi, said that he could vouch for the quality of medical doctors the institution was releasing to the public.
He said that “the institution is not only producing doctors for Nigeria but for the world. I am confident that they will excel wherever they find themselves.”
Ojiyi, however, admonished the new medical doctors to exercise patience on their job, stating that whoever put money first in the practice of the profession might not achieve success.
“The essence of medical practice is to save lives and not to get rich overnight,” he said.
