OGUN State government has assured its teachers of improved welfare and provision of necessary support to motivate them towards imparting meaningful knowledge in the pupils and students in all the public primary and secondary schools in the state.
The deputy governor, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, gave the assurance while receiving the executive members of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools of Nigeria (ASUSS), in her office, Abeokuta.
Mrs Salako-Oyedele said the welfare of teachers was paramount to the Dapo Abiodun-led administration in achieving the promised free education from primary to Junior Secondary School (JSS) level, adding that government would be creative in ensuring that premium education to the people of Ogun State was achieved.
“On assumption of office, the governor declared state of emergency on education and this was on three sides: infrastructures in the schools, continuous profession development and challenges of teachers.

“All these have to come together for students to get qualitative education because you cannot address people without teachers and you cannot address teachers without school infrastructures. As we go along, you will begin to see full implementation of government policies,” she said.
Salako-Oyedele also pledged that the issue of delayed promotion and appointments of Principal-Generals would be looked into, as it was already brought to the attention of the governor.
Earlier in his remarks, the state chairman, Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools’ of Nigeria, (ASUSS), , Comrade Akeem Lasisi said the union was responsible for the welfare of its members, urging government to re-visit the challenges facing the teachers in public schools in the state.
“We want to appeal to the present administration to release the delayed 2016 and 2017 promotion letters, give breath to the realisation of the Teaching Service Establishment Structure, employ more teachers and other personnel as well as allow parents and guardians’ involvement in financial roles in the development of education”, he said.
Highlight of the visit witnessed by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Alhaji Salisu Shuaib, was the decoration of the deputy governor with the union’s muffler.
