NYSC laments deplorable state of orientation camps

The National Youth Service Corps(NYSC), on Tuesday, lamented the deplorable state of orientation camps in some States.

It said the scheme is still grappling with the challenge due to non- discharge of statutory responsibilities by some States and critical stakeholders.

Director-General, NYSC, Brigadier General,  ShuaibuIbrahim stated this at the opening of the 2019 NYSC annual management conference themed: “Optimizing the Operational Efficiency of the NYSC for Effective Service Delivery,” held in Abuja.

He said: “In specific terms, the scheme presently grapples with problems such as dilapidated conditions of the NYSC Orientation camps in some States,  inadequate corps lodge and lack of befitting office accommodation.

“As we strive to surmount these challenges, it is instructive to acknowledge the consistent support of the Federal government,  especially through prompt release of funds and provision of security amongst others.”

He noted that the scheme in the last 46 years, has recorded successes in the areas of national unity and integration, health among others, stressing that its participation in the 2019 General Elections and bye-elections contributed to the credibility of the exercise.

To this end, he urged State governments to ensure the provision of permanent orientation camps or upgrade of facilities in the existing ones as well as secured accommodation for corps members.

Earlier, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mrs Habitat Bappah explained that the conference is an avenue where top managers of the scheme meet to review the operations of the scheme with a view to formulating new policies and new innovations.

She added that:”While we celebrate our modest achievements over the years, we are however looking forward to bringing about innovations and best practices that will make the scheme meet up with the challenges of our dynamic operating environment and continue to create more impact and relevance.”
