The management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has appointed Mr Sylvester Othuke Egede as the substantive port manager of the Tin-Can Island Port Complex (TCIPC).
According to a statement signed on Thursday by the Port Spokesman, Sola Adesanwo, the new Port Manager succeeds Akin Leoso, who served in an acting capacity for two months (November and December 2023) since the exit of Jubril Buba, the former Port Manager who exited the NPA on November 2, 2023.
Prior to Sylvester Egede’s appointment as the Port Manager of TCIPC, he was the Traffic Manager of the Lagos Port Complex from August 2023 until his appointment as Port Manager of TCIPC, Apapa.
Before then, he had served at Kirikiri Lighter Terminal as the traffic manager from 2021–August 2023.
Between 2012 and 2016, he served as the Executive Director, Marine and Operations, as well as Personal Assistant Operations.
Egede, a thoroughbred Operations Officer, first served as a Traffic Manager at the Rivers Port, Port-Harcourt, on his appointment as a Principal Manager of operations, from 2016 to 2021.
Earlier, he was the traffic operations coordinator for the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP/NPA Project Unit) from 2006–2012.
Among several posts he held in the past were Personal Assistant to Port Manager (Tin-Can Island Port); Secretary to the Implementation Committee on ISPS Code Regime in the Port between 2001 and 2004; and Senior Traffic Officer (Supervision of Vessels) discharge, handling, and delivery of cargos (TCIPC) from 2000 to 2001.
Among the professional bodies he belongs to are the American Society of Safety Professionals (member), the Fellow Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (FCILT), etc.
His educational background includes a B.sc Geography from the University of Jos between 1986 and 1990 and an M.Sc. in Transport Planning from Lagos State University (LASU) between 1997 and 1998.
He has attended several conferences and seminars within and outside the country, some of which are the ASCON workshop on Developing Leadership Competence and Capabilities 2020, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in April 2014 and September 2019, and October 2023 in the UK.
He was also in attendance when the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) held a conference in Abuja in August 2018.
He attended the Oil Trade Conference (OTC) (Houston, Texas, USA) at different intervals between 2015 and 2023. He also attended the Port Management and Administration Programmes at the Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden, in 2012.
Mr Egede got a letter of commendation from management on his operational performance during the NIPP/NPA project on the seamless evacuation of NIPP/NDPH power consignments from the Nigerian ports for his exemplary efforts.
Egede is the astute operation czar, who has since resumed duty at Tin-Can Island Port, as the Port Manager is married with children.’
