The staff of the Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis and Onchocerciasis Research (NITR), with headquarters in Kaduna, have expressed their dismay over the non-appointment of a substantive Director General (DG), seven months after President Muhammadu Buhari directed the council to appoint one.
The concerned staff, therefore, asked the Governing Council of NITR to abide by the directive of the President without delay.
A letter was made available to journalists in Kaduna on Sunday with reference number SH/COS/16/A/1487 (paragraph 2 C) dated 1st September 2021, and signed by Senior Special Assistant to the President, Ibrahim Dikko on behalf of the president directed the Governing Council of the institute to commence the process of appointing a substantive Director-General in line with extant rules and regulations guiding the appointment.
However, to their dismay, the concerned staff who pleaded anonymity alleged that nothing was forthcoming as there was no action taken.
“The Council is adamant and failed to abide by the directive. For more than six (6) months with the directive of Mr President, the Governing Council met twice in 2021 and 2022 respectively but the issue of appointment of the substantive Director-General was not on their agenda,” the statement maintained.
The staff claimed that the Overseeing Director-General, Dr Felicia Nneka Chizoba Enwezor can influence the Governing Council on the matter of appointing a substantive Director-General of the Institute in accordance with President Buhari’s directive.
When contacted to speak on the issue raised by the staff, the overseer of the NITR, Felicia Nneka declined to comment.
